Antique Blackington sterling silver Art Nouveau dance purse

This is a lovely, quite wonderful, late 1800's to 1900 sterling silver dance purse made by the R. Blackinton & Co. of North Attleboro, MA. This purse was cast with high relief flowers and is 100% Art Nouveau, no question about it and the Blackinton sterling hallmark confirms that fact without doubt.

Art Nouveau 1900 Blackington sterling silver dance purse

Just a wee bit of history: The company was founded by Walter Ballou and Roswell Blackinton at North Attleboro MA in 1862 and continued as R. Blackinton & Co. until 1967. The original B pierced by a sword trademark, as shown below, was used until 1900. Their work was honored and of a very high standard. Today, collector's continue to admire their work and there are fewer and fewer of these purses available with each passing year. Sterling silver is always a challenge to photograph so please excuse any reflections of light or color. Otherwise, my photos are very good and show you an excellent depiction of what to expect. The high relief florals are outstanding, the entire purse is a charming and sophisticated work of art. The front and back sides of this vanity dance purse come together beautifully, having no gaps or problems with the hinge or closure. The closure is a push in style that releases a catch to allow the purse to open and close securely. The backside has a very fancy monogram, no doubt having the original owners initials.

The interior has it's proper sterling hallmark with the Blackinton B through the sword mark and the numbers 425, possibly a style number. The original silk lining is present but shows all of it's age, including splitting and fraying. How wonderful that there are three dance cards still remaining inside the purse, all three from the same gentleman, must have been a favorite. This purse measures 3⅝ inches from side to side by 3 inches from top to bottom and has a depth of approx. inch. The chain handle drops the purse by 6 inches. The condition is so very respectable with only a couple of very small flaws, one being very tiny dimpling on one of the bottom corners and another small shallow dent on the backside of the purse. There are a few scratches and a faint scuff on the backside but nothing really too naughty at all. Considering the age of this purse, I would consider it as having been very well cared for. This is a fine example of an antique Art Nouveau, sterling silver Blackinton dance purse and would be an awesome addition to any collection or it would make a thoughtful gift, one that will be prized.
